Strawberries

Strawberries

Nothing signals the start of the British summer like the first home grown British strawberries. On the market already are glasshouse grown strawberries, these are beautifully sweet and perfectly formed! These berries have been protected from the elements by being in the glass houses which are also heated to make them ripen earlier, so we can have British berries sooner. Over the next few weeks we will see more and more UK fruit available as the outdoor crop becomes available. The cold nights have meant that ripening has been slower than normal and the outdoor season is a bit late. At the moment the main variety that is available is Elsanta, but look out for other varieties such as Darselect, Elianny an Elsinore It’s a great time to start experimenting with strawberries. They are packed full of vitamin C, and about 7 berries will give you your RDA . They are also rich in many other nutrients but above all they taste great! Here are a few ideas of what to do with your strawberries.

raspberries and blueberries stirred in too.

Blackberries

Blackberries

Blackberries continue to have a tough year. We are still sourcing fruit from Mexico and Guatemala. This supply was recently disrupted by the Icelandic Volcano ash that halted all UK flights. Things are mostly back to normal now and we will continue to source from this region until the end of May when there will be Dutch Glass House grown fruit available.

Raspberries

Raspberries

At the moment we are sourcing raspberries from Spain. Glen Lyon has been on the shelves for the last few weeks, but is now coming to the end of its season. Brilliance will take over and be available for the rest of May. We are also seeing other varieties, including Tulameen and Sugana. There are also some English glasshouse grown raspberries just starting to be available at this stage in early May. As we move towards mid June we will see English outdoor production grow.

Blueberries

Blueberries

Blueberries have been sourced from Morocco for the last month or so. That season is beginning to come to an end now and the majority of Blueberries are now coming from Spain. The berries have been very large and are bursting with flavour. The main variety that you will see on the shelves at the moment is called Star

Rhubarb

Rhubarb

Rhubarb continues to be popular this year. The forced crop is now finished and we are now in the outdoor season. You will notice that the sticks are no longer a light pink colour but have the traditional green and pink blush. Rhubarb is not just for the winter but can be used in lots of light summer dishes.
