Spanish crop delayed

The impact of poor weather across Europe spreading as far south as the Mediterranean has meant that the cold wet conditions have delayed the Spanish crop by as much as three to four weeks.  It is now a case of waiting for an improvement before sourcing gets back to a more normal level.

Meanwhile we have been able to maintain our programmes with some excellent fruit from Egypt, much of which is based on recently introduced Redeva varieties which have achieved very high standards and this has been confirmed with some excellent feedback from customers.

Volume is also supported with arrivals from Morocco, following a dip in availability, again due to an unseasonable rainy period.

Israel has helped plug any gaps with good quality, although there has been some reduction in availability due to the poor exchange rate.

Improvements ahead

Spain is the major source at this time of the year, where the weather throughout December and January fruit has created shortages due to climatic conditions. We are now seeing signs of improvement, so that quantities are expected to build from next week. We expect to see appreciable quantities early next month creating promotional opportunities.

Still going strong

Mexico remains the lynchpin as the quality source for a long run of Tupi, which is now regarded as the best variety available. A steady supply of fruit has meant that blackberries have been able to help fill any gaps in the berry offer, adding to their popularity.

Take your pick

Chilean fruit provides the main plank with regular arrivals supported by top quality berries flown in from New Zealand.

This mixed offer scenario will be maintained through into March, and reduce pressure on the first USA and Spanish crop (which may be late). If temperatures rise there could be a dramatic improvement moving towards a more favourable supply position at this point

Popular purchase

Both English and Dutch forced crops are at their peak at present with some excellent quality coming forward at a time when demand has strengthened due to the low temperatures.

This has been an added stimulus to consumer interest which has been building over recent seasons, giving the crop a new lease of life.
