Strawberries
Surge in demand
High temperatures and brilliant sunshine more in keeping with the heat of summer has had its affect on consumer demand to the point where while excellent quality fruit is available, volumes have been hard pressed to keep up with the demand.
Dutch glasshouse crops have already come to a close, although English was still available mid month. Our own national crop under tunnels is expected to come forward, if the weather holds around late May/early June, which will alleviate the situation.

Mix and match
With consumer demand at a high point it has been a question of sourcing additional volume to keep in step with increased programmes.
Overall quality has been good with arrivals including the initial pickings of protected crops from the United Kingdom supported Spain, Portugal and as far afield as South Africa.

Mexico waves good-bye
We are at the point in time where the Mexican crop is now coming to a close and being replaced with European fruit. English glasshouse is playing its part in meeting demand alongside Dutch arrivals which are expected to last through until July.
Spain is also showing its hand and a welcome addition.
 Blueberries
Bridging the gap
While it is good news that consumers have taken blueberries to their heart it has been a difficult time meeting demand.
Variable weather conditions through the growing season in Spain have lead to lower yields than expected creating an unexpected shortage, although we are able to still supplement programmes with fruit drawn from the United States in the more northerly states now that Florida has passed its peak.
The arrival of the French crop at the end of the month, then lasting through until July will correct the situation to some extent. This will make the arrival of real volume from Poland in August doubly welcome if the consumer trend continues.
 Red Currants
As the Dutch new crop ripens there is still sufficient fruit available in controlled atmosphere storage to meet any increase in demand from our specialised patisserie customers who experience a surge with the arrival of the "summer season" with both its national and local events.
Quality remains excellent so orders can continue to be fulfilled with confidence.
 Rhubarb
Dual control
Both English and Dutch outdoor crop growers continue to have crops available following a time of earlier spring shortage. |
